Musical Awakening
in The Gambia

King Marong, a Gambian Master Percussionist, Singer, Composer, Teacher, and Cultural Ambassador, has embarked on a remarkable journey that spans continents and cultures.

Born in The Gambia, West Africa, King’s musical journey began at a young age, surrounded by the rich traditions of the griots, the hereditary musicians of his coastal fishing village.

From the age of 12, King started performing professionally, honing his skills and immersing himself in the Senegambian drumming and cultural heritage. Inspired by his mentors and driven by his passion for music, he formed his band, Kunta Kinteh, in his late teens.

Together, they embarked on a tour that took them across The Gambia, Senegal, the UK, and Europe, gaining international recognition along the way.

KING'S CALLING
"During my childhood days I was the drummer of my Christmas club. Although I was going to school, I realised that my future lies in music. Upon this realisation, I decided to choose music as my profession. Through it I travelled to Australia where I lectured traditional Gambian music in colleges and universities. Furthermore, I also make traditional Gambian musical instruments and teach African village lifestyle to Australians."
